Splitting expenses on a Berlin trip - what to budget, how to settle up

Last updated by The EvenRound team.

Currywurst, Berghain queue beers, and one Späti run that became three.

Berlin is the European capital where group expenses go feral. Späti runs at 3am for €1.50 beers compound into hundreds of euros over a weekend, club queues span hours during which one person buys snacks for the whole line, and Sunday brunch is a full-day affair where the bill arrives in installments. Cash is still common at clubs, kebab shops, and Spätis. Bring it.

Common shared-expense scenarios in Berlin

  1. 01
Späti run becomes a Späti night

One person grabs €40 of beers from the corner Späti. Two hours later it's €30 more. Cash mostly.

    Split tip

Log every Späti run as a separate expense the moment it happens. They're impossible to reconstruct.

  2. 02
Berghain cover charge with a long queue

Cover is €20–€30 per person, cash only at the door. Some get in, some don't.

    Split tip

Personal - only attendees pay. Don't let one person front it expecting to get reimbursed if half the group gets refused.

  3. 03
Sunday brunch buffet with mixed attendees

Berlin brunch is €18–€25 buffet plus drinks ordered separately. Some people only have coffee.

    Split tip

Buffet portion exact (per attendee), drinks equal among drinkers.

  4. 04
BVG day pass for the whole group

    One person buys 4 day passes at the kiosk. €9.50 × 4 = €38.

    Split tip

Equal split among the 4 people who used theirs. Don't include the person who walked everywhere.

  5. 05
Group cab from Sisyphos at 7am

Outer-ring clubs like Sisyphos and Else need a cab back. Often €25–€40 split among 4–5 people.

    Split tip

Equal split among riders. Log it before everyone passes out at home.

Recommended split mode for Berlin

Equal for shared, exact for clubs and personal kebabs

Club covers and individual food orders need to be exact - not everyone makes it past the door, not everyone wants the döner. Don't equal-split a Berghain night.

Best for groups of …

Best for groups of 4–8. Berghain queues thin out groups bigger than 6 - the bouncers prefer twos and threes.

Currency notes

Eurozone. Cash is still essential - Spätis, kebab shops, and most clubs are cash-only. Tipping is round-up to 10% at restaurants. Most ATMs labelled with a major bank logo charge nothing; avoid Euronet ATMs at Hauptbahnhof. Berlin has many independent ATMs at clubs that charge €5+ - find a Sparkasse instead.

Berlin demands real-time logging. Spätis and clubs are where every group expense system breaks down - log instantly or accept that some money will be lost forever.
