Splitting expenses on a Reykjavik trip - what to budget, how to settle up

Last updated by The EvenRound team.

Blue Lagoon spa day, fish-and-chips at €30, and one rental 4x4 nobody wants to drive.

Iceland is the most expensive group trip on this list. A casual fish-and-chips lunch in Reykjavik is €25–€35. The Blue Lagoon entrance is €70+ before any add-ons. The Golden Circle day trip with a rental 4x4 is €200–€300 split four ways before petrol. Splitting expenses correctly here is critical because every category can spike. Multi-currency support matters - log in ISK, settle in your home currency.

Common shared-expense scenarios in Reykjavik

  1. 01
    Blue Lagoon with mixed packages

Comfort, Premium, Retreat - packages range from €70 to €350 per person. Plus drinks ordered in the water (silica mask is included; alcoholic drinks aren't).

    Split tip

Each person buys their own package. Add personal in-water drinks to their own tab.

  2. 02
Rental 4x4 for the Golden Circle / South Coast

Nismo or Hertz: €100–€180 a day for a Toyota RAV4 or Land Cruiser. Fuel €40–€70 per long day.

    Split tip

Car equal across riders (including the driver - they're not driving for free, they're providing labour); fuel equal across all riders.

  3. 03
Reykjavik dinner where one main is fermented shark

Some splurge on tasting menus (€90+ at Dill or Matur og Drykkur), some get fish and chips at €30.

    Split tip

Exact per attendee. Don't equal-split a tasting menu across people who wanted fish and chips.

  4. 04
    Whale-watching trip with seasickness pills

Tour ISK 13,500 per person. Gear rental optional. Some skip and stay at the harbour bar.

    Split tip

    Per-attendee. Exclude non-attendees.

  5. 05
Group hot dog run at Bæjarins Beztu

ISK 660 per hot dog (~€4.30) - Reykjavik's one cheap food. Each person grabs theirs.

    Split tip

Personal. The line is too long to pool.

Recommended split mode for Reykjavik

Exact for activities and meals, equal for transport and accommodation

Iceland prices are high enough that equal-splitting an activity someone skipped becomes a real argument. Be precise.

Currency notes

Icelandic króna (ISK). Card payments are universal - Iceland is the world's most cashless country. ATMs at Landsbankinn, Íslandsbanki, and Arion charge nothing if your card supports it. No tipping expected (service is included). Always decline DCC. The duty-free shop at Keflavik on arrival has the cheapest alcohol in Iceland - most travellers stock up there.

Reykjavik is the trip where casual budgets blow up most quickly. Log every meal and activity the moment it happens - by trip end, the cumulative damage is honestly stunning.
