Splitting expenses on a Vienna trip - what to budget, how to settle up

Last updated by The EvenRound team.

Sachertorte, opera-house standing tickets, and one heuriger evening that ran past midnight.

Vienna is the capital where group trips inevitably split between the high-culture wing (opera, museums, palaces) and the low-key wing (heuriger wine taverns, sausage stands, beer halls). Both wings cost real money. Standing-room opera tickets are €13 but require queuing; palace combo tickets are €40+ per person; a heuriger evening with a meat platter and wine for four runs €120. Decide which half of Vienna you're paying for before you arrive.

Realistic per-person daily budget

Local currency: Euro (EUR)

CategoryPer person, per dayNotes
Accommodation€70–€1101st or 7th district apartment for 4; central hotels run €160–€240/night for a double.
Food and drinks€40–€65Würstelstand sausage (€4), schnitzel lunch (€18–€25), heuriger evening (€35–€45), Sachertorte and coffee (€12).
Transport€8–€10Wiener Linien day pass (€8). Airport CAT (€14) or S-Bahn S7 (€4.40).
Activities and entrances€25–€45Schönbrunn (€26), Belvedere (€18), Kunsthistorisches (€21), opera standing room (€13–€18, cash at the door).

Common shared-expense scenarios in Vienna

  1. 01
Opera standing-room queue with one person pre-buying

Tickets are €13–€18 cash at the door, sold 80 minutes before curtain. One person queues for the group.

    Split tip

Equal split among attendees. The queuer often wants a coffee comp - log a small €5 expense as 'queueing thanks'.

  2. 02
Heuriger evening with a meat platter for the table

Heurigers in Grinzing or Stammersdorf serve a 'Brettljause' platter for €20–€35 plus wine by the carafe (Viertel = 0.25L).

    Split tip

Platter equal across eaters, wine equal across drinkers.

  3. 03
Schönbrunn combo ticket bought in advance

Classic Pass is €31, Sisi Ticket is €44. Some want the gardens, some want the maze, some want the palace.

    Split tip

Each person buys the ticket level they want. Don't centralise - the variance is too high.

  4. 04
    Würstelstand round at midnight

Bitzinger or Würstelstand am Hohen Markt: each person grabs a different sausage, all on one card.

    Split tip

Log the total as 'paid by X, equal split' if everyone got something. If one person abstained, exact-amount per item.

  5. 05
    Coffee-house afternoon with separate orders

Café Central or Hawelka: melange, einspänner, fiaker, plus apple strudel and Sachertorte. Each person orders different.

    Split tip

Receipt scanning. The Viennese coffee-house bill is itemised - use it directly.

Recommended split mode for Vienna

Exact for restaurants and tickets, equal for transport

Vienna's price variance is high per person within any single meal or attraction. Use exact splits to avoid arguments.

Currency notes

Eurozone. Tipping is 5–10% - round up the bill. Some heurigers and Würstelstands are cash-only. The Wiener Linien transit system is honor-system but heavily controlled - fines are €100+ for fare-dodging, even by tourists.

Vienna is the city where everyone in your group has slightly different cultural priorities. Pay for what you want; don't subsidise the museum-skipper or guilt the museum-lover.
